Job Description:
Position: Superintendent Location: Mobile, AL Job Id: 230 # of
Openings: 0 Summary/Objective:The Superintendent directs and
coordinates the operations of discharge, load, berthing and
departure of assigned vessel guaranteeing quality, security, safety
and efficiency in accordance with relevant operational and
technical parameters. This position serves as first line supervisor
of the operations management team and is responsible for the
direction and supervision of union workers. While maintaining a
positive working relationship with the labor, the Superintendent is
to set the standard and be held accountable for a safe and
efficient operation. The Superintendent is often the only member of
management interacting with labor while working a ship and must
represent the interests of SSA while supervising the union labor.
Essential Responsibilities:Supervises personnel in proper operating
procedures, and counsels, disciplines and/or makes termination
decisions as needed to ensure an efficient operation while working
within the restrictions of the labor agreement. The Superintendents
termination decisions are subject to review by higher
management.Enforces productivity levels by supervising workers
within the terminal operation and provides follow up assessments
prior to shift end.Ensures that all PPE is worn at all times and
distributed for jobs that require additional PPE.Ensures
availability of equipment and personnel required for timely
completion of scheduled vessel operations, and that staff and
equipment are fully utilized, optimize resources utilization and
uptime to meet the economic performance indicators, and assist as
necessary with other required tasks in order to turn the vessel
around within specific time.Serves as a key coordinator between
vessels, customers, agents, labor and others.Prior to vessel
arriving review all documents associated with operations and make
sure all equipment and gear is ready prior to starting
operations.Plans, designs and implements rigging
arrangements.Enforces productivity levels by supervising longshore
workers in making multiple rounds within the terminal/vessel
operation and a follow up assessments prior to shift pletes various
reports and forms such as shift production, payroll, and safety
summaries; Produces reports to respective parties within required
deadlines.Responsible for compliance under HAZMAT and OSHA
Regulations. Including reporting any incidents to the Supervisor
immediately. Plans, holds and documents daily safety meetings;
partnering with Area Health, Safety & Environment to understand and
train longshore workers to adhere to safety procedures while
implementing plans to address safety hazards.Responsible for
supplying all stevedoring gear, safety gear, and radios to the
proper individuals prior to the start of vessel operations.Oversees
and ensures that all policies and procedures are being managed
efficiently and effectively.Visually inspects areas for hazards and
brings all inquiries to management.May be required to verify all
cargo is loaded/discharged efficiently and within forms management
of any issues related to proper staffing of ILA personnel.Partners
with management in hiring, discipline, and documentation as well as
termination process for ILA employees.Enforces and follows plans,
requirements and orders.Responsible for investigation and reporting
damages and liabilities to the appropriate management and
authorities.Responsible for collection of all stevedoring gear,
safety gear, and radios at completion of vessel gangs.Maintains a
safe and efficient work environment.Other duties as required.
Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent work experience.At
least 3 years managing labor preferred.Valid Driver's License and
CPR certificate requiredExtensive rigging expertise, including
load/stress and calculation skills.Thorough knowledge or principles
of terminal operationsKnowledge of safety and accident prevention
codes and regulationsKnowledge and understanding of cargo stowage
and stability strongly desired Knowledge of local unions
dispatching rules.Required to observe all safety and health
requirements for container terminal environment.TWIC card Required.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Yes Union laborWork environment:Must
be able to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings and nights.Must
be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures of hot and cold,
extremely dusty conditions and occasionally, conditions of high
levels of noise.The ability to work in an environment that may be
hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving
