COASTAL / WETLAND SCIENTISTHours: Full Time Location: Ocean Springs, MS or Baton Rouge, LAPosition OverviewThe Coastal / Wetland Scientist's main function will be to provide high-quality scientific support to Cypress Environment & Infrastructure teammates, projects, and clients.
This position is junior level, for candidates with an MS degree and 1-3 years experience.
The goal of this position is to provide services related to various multi-disciplinary environmental science projects which could include, -natural resources, GIS, planning, environmental site assessments and environmental permitting. A background in consulting is preferred. This position will include southeastern US and national travel.
The Opportunity:Cypress is a growing firm and we are seeking a person who has strong background and a deep interest in multi-disciplinary science and engineering studies. We plan and design a variety of interdisciplinary projects and this role would support services to those projects and clients. We provide environmental services to private, state, and federal clients in support of private industry, port operations, civil design, and ecosystem restoration. The ideal person is highly motivated to become an expert in their field and produce outstanding results for our clients while providing great service to team members in a collaborative atmosphere.

Who you will work with:Cypress's president is Cindy Henderson, an environmental engineer and professional wetland scientist with 21 years of experience in a variety of interdisciplinary projects and working across government, academic, and private sectors. She founded Cypress in 2010 to provide quality environmental and engineering services to clients in the southeast.Cypress's vice president is Marc Foster, an environmental planner with 28 years of experience in project management, environmental planning, and GIS working with municipal, state, and federal clients. He joined Cypress in 2010.

    The role includes being an:
    • Active team member on GIS projects, and providing geospatial skills on planning, environmental or engineering projects
    • Active team member on writing technical reports
    • Active team member on environmental & natural resource field studies
    • Supportive team member on completing environmental permitting (USACE 404, state wetlands, 401 WQ, Coastal Zone) for a variety of private and public projects
    • Supportive team member for wetlands vegetation assessments, native plant identification, and invasive species identification
      The anticipated field/office work split for this position is estimated at 25% field / 75% office.
      A typical field day might include:
      • Arriving at the office early to start a field day with team members
      • Completing a wetland delineation with miles of walking per day carrying required equipment
      • Completing documentation for the wetland delineation to support the field team with accurate observations for plants, soils, and hydrology indicators
      • Returning to the office and unloading, cleaning, and charging equipment as appropriate -A typical office day might include:
        • Attending team meeting to update other team members on project statuses and needs for assistance
        • Lots of maps and documents
        • Execute assigned tasks on 2-4 projects
        • Submitting a report to staff mentor for reviews and feedback

          • 1+ year of direct experience
          • Outstanding written & oral communication skills
          • Outstanding technical skills in ArcGIS
          • Enthusiastic about environmental data
          • MS degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Biology or an allied field
          • Valid driver's license and good driving record
          • Be able to carry 30+ lbs
          • Legally able to work in the US
            Preferred qualifications:
            • 3+ years of direct experience
            • Consulting experience
            • Field experience with Trimble GPS units
            • Experience with boats, UTV, ATVs
